The Basics
Insurance that follows the driver, not the car
Almost every auto policy is built around a vehicle. You list the car, the VIN goes on the policy, and the coverage attaches to that car. Non-owner insurance works the other way around: it attaches to you.
It provides liability coverage — injuries and property damage you cause to other people — when you’re driving a car you don’t own. Typically it also includes uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage.
There’s one thing it does not do, and it’s important: there’s no collision or comprehensive coverage. No car on the policy means no physical damage coverage. If you wreck a borrowed car, the damage to that car is not covered by your non-owner policy — it falls to the owner’s insurance, and then likely back on you.
It’s also secondary coverage in most cases. When you drive someone else’s car with permission, their policy generally responds first. Your non-owner policy sits behind it and picks up where their limits stop — which is exactly the protection you want, because their limits are often the state minimum.
The Main Reason
The SR-22 problem this solves
Most people who find this page are stuck in a specific bind, and it feels like a catch-22.
Your license was suspended. The DMV says you need an SR-22 filing to get it back. But an SR-22 has to come from an insurance policy — and you sold the car, or it was repossessed, or you never had one. So you can’t get insurance without a car, and you can’t get your license back without insurance.
A non-owner policy breaks that loop. It’s a real policy that satisfies the requirement, and it can carry the SR-22 filing to the DMV. You don’t need to own, borrow, or even have access to a vehicle to buy one.
We can usually bind the policy and get the filing out the same day. If you’re working against a DMV deadline, call early in the day rather than late.
One warning that matters more here than almost anywhere: do not let this policy lapse while the filing is active. If it cancels, your insurer notifies the DMV and your license can be suspended again — undoing everything you just went through. Set up autopay, and call us before a payment becomes a problem, not after. Confirm your specific reinstatement requirements with the California DMV, since they vary by case.

Who It’s For
Five people who should have this policy
📄 SR-22 without a car
By far the most common reason. The DMV needs a filing to reinstate your license and you don’t own a vehicle. This is the policy that carries it.
🚗 Frequent borrowers
You regularly drive a friend’s or relative’s car. Their limits may be thin — this sits behind theirs and protects your own assets if you cause a bad accident.
⏳ Between vehicles
Sold your car and buying another in a few months. This keeps your insurance history continuous — and a gap costs you for years afterward.
🔑 Regular renters
If you rent cars often, this can be cheaper over a year than buying the counter’s liability add-on every time. Ask us to compare for your rental frequency.
🚌 City drivers
You don’t need a car day to day but drive occasionally. Keeps you covered and keeps your record continuous for whenever you do buy again.
✕ NOT for you if…
You own a car, or there’s a vehicle in your household you drive regularly. In those cases you need a standard policy — see the next section.
Read Before You Buy
When a non-owner policy is the wrong answer
We’d rather tell you this up front than sell you something that won’t work. A non-owner policy is not for you if:
You own a vehicle. Even one that’s parked, non-running, or you rarely drive. If a car is titled to you, you need a policy that lists it.
There’s a car in your household you drive regularly. This is the one that trips people up. If you live with a spouse, parent, or roommate and routinely drive their car, carriers generally expect you to be listed on their policy as a driver — not carrying a non-owner policy on the side. Buying the wrong one here can mean a denied claim.
You have regular access to a specific car. “Furnished for your regular use” is commonly excluded. A car you drive most days isn’t an occasional borrow, no matter whose name is on the title.
You need the borrowed car itself covered. There’s no collision or comprehensive here. If you damage the car you’re driving, this policy won’t repair it.
You drive for a rideshare or delivery app. Commercial and rideshare use is excluded. That needs a rideshare endorsement or commercial auto coverage.
Describe your actual living and driving situation honestly when you call, and we’ll put you in the right policy the first time. The cheapest policy that gets denied at claim time is the most expensive one you can buy.
Cost
What it costs, and why it’s cheaper
Non-owner policies generally cost less than a standard auto policy, for two structural reasons: there’s no physical damage coverage on any vehicle, and you’re presumed to drive less than someone with a car in the driveway.
What still drives your price is the usual set: your driving record, whether you need an SR-22, your liability limits, your ZIP code, and your insurance history. A clean record makes this an inexpensive policy. A DUI makes it cost more — though still typically less than insuring a vehicle.
Something most people don’t realize: not every carrier writes non-owner policies, and among those that do, fewer will attach an SR-22 to one. That’s a narrow market — which is precisely why calling one big-name company and being told no proves very little. We know which carriers handle these, and we go straight to them.
On limits: it’s tempting to buy the state minimum and move on. Just remember this policy exists to protect you — there’s no car being covered, so the liability limit is the entire point of it. Ask us to price a higher limit alongside the minimum; the difference is often smaller than people expect.
Common Questions
Non-owner insurance FAQs
Can a non-owner policy carry an SR-22?
Yes — that’s the most common reason people buy one. It satisfies the DMV’s proof-of-insurance requirement without needing a vehicle on the policy, and we can usually bind coverage and file the same day. See our SR-22 page for how the filing works.
Does it cover damage to the car I’m driving?
No. There’s no collision or comprehensive coverage because no vehicle is listed. It covers injuries and property damage you cause to others. Damage to the borrowed car falls to the owner’s policy — and they may look to you for their deductible.
I live with my parents and drive their car. Is this right for me?
Usually not. If there’s a vehicle in your household you drive regularly, carriers generally expect you to be listed as a driver on that policy instead. Buying a non-owner policy in that situation can lead to a denied claim. Call us and describe the setup — we’ll tell you which is correct.
Is it cheaper than regular car insurance?
Generally yes, since there’s no physical damage coverage and lower assumed mileage. Your record, SR-22 status, and chosen limits still determine the actual number. Call us with your details for a real quote.
Does it cover rental cars?
The liability portion typically extends to rentals, which can beat buying the counter’s liability add-on repeatedly. But it won’t cover damage to the rental itself — you’d still want the rental company’s damage waiver for that. Tell us how often you rent and we’ll do the math with you.
Can I use it for Uber, Lyft, or DoorDash?
No. Rideshare and delivery driving are excluded from non-owner policies. That requires a rideshare endorsement on a standard policy or commercial auto coverage. Ask us before you start driving for an app.
What happens when I buy a car?
Call us before you drive it off the lot and we’ll convert you to a standard policy — carrying the SR-22 filing over if you still need it. Keeping continuous coverage through the transition also protects the rate you’ve been rebuilding.
