Built For This Valley
We insure the trucks that move the Central Valley
Modesto sits in the middle of one of the busiest freight corridors in the country. Almonds, milk, tomatoes, and produce move out of Stanislaus County every day, and Highway 99 and Interstate 5 carry it north and south. If you own a truck around here, you already know the work is there — the hard part is keeping the insurance in place and affordable enough that the numbers still work.
Trucking is its own world of insurance. It is not commercial auto with a bigger vehicle on it — it has its own coverages, its own filings, its own underwriting questions, and its own set of carriers, most of which will not talk to you directly. That is where an independent agency earns its keep: we know which markets want your operation and which will decline it before we waste your time.
We write owner-operators running under their own authority, owner-operators leased on to a motor carrier, small fleets, ag and produce haulers, box trucks and hot shots, and dump and construction trucks. One truck is enough — we do not have a minimum fleet size.
Coverages
What goes on a trucking policy
Not every truck needs every one of these. We build the policy around how you actually run.
🛡️ Primary Liability
The required coverage for injuries and property damage you cause to others. This is what your filings are based on and what brokers check before they give you a load. Nothing else moves until this is in place.
📦 Motor Truck Cargo
Covers the freight you’re hauling. Most brokers require it before they’ll tender a load. Watch the exclusions closely — refrigerated breakdown, theft, and certain commodities often need to be specifically added.
🚛 Physical Damage
Damage to your own tractor and trailer — collision, fire, theft, vandalism. If there’s a lienholder on the truck, they will require it. If the truck is paid off, it’s your call, but replacing a tractor out of pocket is a business-ending event.
🔄 Bobtail / Non-Trucking
For leased-on drivers: covers you when you’re driving without a trailer or not under dispatch — the gap the motor carrier’s policy doesn’t cover. Cheap coverage that fills an expensive hole.
🔗 Trailer Interchange
Damage to a trailer you’re pulling that belongs to someone else under a written interchange agreement. If you pull other people’s trailers, you need this — your physical damage coverage won’t respond.
⚖️ General Liability
Covers what happens off the truck — injuries at your yard, damage while loading or unloading. Many shippers and brokers require it alongside your auto liability before you can haul for them.
Filings
CHP and FMCSA filings, handled
Buying the policy is only half of it. Regulators need proof that the coverage exists, and that proof is a filing — an electronic notice your insurance company sends to the agency on your behalf. Miss it, and your authority can be suspended even though you’re fully insured and paying premium.
If you run intrastate in California only, you’ll be dealing with the CHP’s Motor Carrier Permit program, which requires evidence of insurance on file to keep your MCP active. If you run interstate under your own authority, the FMCSA requires a filing tied to your MC number — commonly a Form MCS-90 endorsement on the policy, with minimum liability limits set by federal regulation based on what you haul. General freight carries one minimum; hazardous materials carry substantially higher ones.
Here’s the practical part: most shippers and brokers require higher limits than the legal minimum — a $1,000,000 combined single limit is the common ask, and plenty of contracts want more. Being legal and being hireable are two different bars. Tell us who you’re hauling for and what their contract requires, and we’ll write to that number rather than the floor.
Requirements change, so verify current limits with the FMCSA or CHP before you rely on any number — including ours. What we can promise is that we’ll confirm the requirement that applies to your operation and make sure the filing actually goes out.

Leased On vs. Own Authority
Which policy you need depends on how you run
This is the question that decides your whole insurance program, and a lot of drivers get sold the wrong thing because nobody asked it properly.
If you’re leased on to a motor carrier, their policy usually covers you while you’re under dispatch pulling their freight. What it typically does not cover is you running bobtail, deadheading home, or using the truck for personal errands. That’s the gap bobtail and non-trucking liability fill, and it’s inexpensive. Your physical damage on the tractor is also usually your own responsibility even when leased on — check your lease agreement, and bring it to us if you’re unsure.
If you run under your own authority, everything is on you: primary liability at the limit your filings and contracts require, cargo, physical damage, and usually general liability. It costs considerably more than a bobtail policy — which is exactly why some drivers stay leased on longer than they planned. Going independent is a real financial decision, and we’ll give you honest numbers before you file for authority rather than after.
If you’re thinking about getting your own authority, call us before you pull the trigger. Knowing the real insurance cost up front is the difference between a plan that works and one that strands you three months in.
What Drives Your Premium
Why your quote is what it is — and how to move it
Trucking underwriters look at a specific set of things, and knowing them tells you where you actually have leverage:
✓ Driver experience and MVRs — the single biggest factor, especially CDL years
✓ Radius of operation — local and regional price better than long-haul
✓ What you haul — produce and dry van differ enormously from hazmat or autos
✓ Loss history — and your CSA/safety scores if you have authority
✓ Truck value and age — drives the physical damage portion
✓ Limits and deductibles — including any deductible you can genuinely absorb
✓ Years in business — brand-new authorities pay a premium for the first year or two
Two pieces of practical advice. First, clean MVRs are the cheapest insurance you can buy — if you’re hiring, pull the MVR before the driver, not after, because one bad record can reprice your whole policy. Second, if you’ve been in business more than a year, re-shop at renewal. Trucking markets move hard and fast, and the carrier that was competitive when you were new is very often not the best fit once you have a clean year behind you. That re-shop is exactly what we do for our clients automatically.
Who We Write
Operations we insure
🌾 Ag & Produce Haulers
Almonds, tomatoes, milk, and seasonal produce. Reefer breakdown coverage matters enormously here — a load of spoiled product is a cargo claim most basic policies exclude.
📦 Box Trucks & Hot Shots
Smaller equipment, expedited freight, and gooseneck operations. Often easier to place than a Class 8 tractor and a good entry point into the business.
🏗️ Dump & Construction
Aggregate, soil, and debris hauling for job sites. Usually needs general liability alongside the auto coverage — and often a contractor package too.
🚛 Owner-Operators
One truck, your name on the door. Whether you’re leased on or running your own authority, we’ll write the policy that matches — not the one that’s easiest to sell.
🚚 Small Fleets
Two to twenty power units. At this size you’ll also want workers’ comp for your drivers — California requires it with even one employee.
🆕 New Authorities
Just got your MC number? Expect higher first-year pricing and fewer markets. It gets better with a clean year — and we’ll re-shop you the moment it does.

Common Questions
Trucking insurance FAQs
How much does trucking insurance cost?
It varies more than almost any other line of insurance — driver record, radius, commodity, truck value, loss history, and years in business all move it substantially. Anyone quoting you a number without asking those questions is guessing. Call us with your details and we’ll shop it across our trucking markets and give you real figures.
Can you file my MCS-90 or CHP filing?
Yes. The carrier submits the filing electronically once the policy is bound, and we make sure it goes out and confirm it landed. Tell us whether you run intrastate California, interstate, or both, and we’ll set up the right filings for your authority.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?
Usually the same day for an active policy — often within the hour if you call early. Send us the broker or shipper’s exact requirements, including any additional insured wording, and we’ll issue it correctly the first time so you’re not going back and forth while a load waits.
I’m leased on to a carrier. Do I need my own policy?
Usually yes — bobtail or non-trucking liability for when you’re not under dispatch, and typically physical damage on your own tractor. The motor carrier’s policy generally only responds while you’re hauling their freight. Bring us your lease agreement and we’ll tell you exactly what’s covered and what isn’t.
What liability limit do I actually need?
Federal minimums depend on what you haul, but in practice the number that matters is what your brokers and shippers require — commonly $1,000,000 combined single limit, sometimes more. Being legal isn’t the same as being hireable. Confirm current federal requirements with the FMCSA, and tell us your contract requirements so we quote the right limit.
Does cargo insurance cover refrigerated loads?
Only if reefer breakdown coverage is specifically included — many base cargo policies exclude spoilage from mechanical failure. If you haul produce or dairy out of this valley, this is one of the most important exclusions to check, and one of the most common uncovered claims we see.
I just got my authority. Will anyone insure me?
Yes, though fewer markets will look at you and first-year pricing is higher — that’s normal and not personal. Your CDL experience helps a lot even when the authority is new. The important thing is not to lock yourself into that first-year rate forever: come back at renewal and we’ll re-shop it with a clean year on the books.

The rest of your business
Trucking is usually one piece of a bigger picture. If you have employees you’ll need workers’ compensation, and most operations carry general liability alongside the auto coverage. Non-trucking work vehicles belong on a commercial auto policy, and our commercial insurance hub covers the full picture.
Two more that come up constantly for drivers: if you’re taking a personal vehicle south of the border, you need Mexico tourist auto insurance — note that a tourist policy does not cover commercial hauling. And your personal auto, home, and life insurance can all be reviewed at the same time — life insurance matters a great deal when a family depends on one driver’s income.
